@ohnoitsjanai: sure the setting defined the genre but can we consider more diverse worlds? fantasy is literally a sandbox. why does everything look the same? #fantasybooks #fantasy #writers #medieval #media

Because the “medieval aesthetic” is almost entirely rooted in English history and the aesthetic of the British medieval period

Most medieval fantasy is closely related to Arthurian mythology which is predominantly England and France

I think the main reason why most fantasy stuff is set in essentially medieval England is bc all modern fantasy especially high fantasy is heavily influenced/inspired by the Hobbit and LoTR. Tolkien is the father of modern high fantasy.

my big thing is honestly we just need more fantasy that’s…not medieval. why aren’t there 18th and 19th century-based fantasy stories? that’s why I love shows like Arcane. also, alternative settings are cool. hats off to GRRM for conceptualizing Essos.

Medieval fantasy is heavily based on medieval Britain and France, which are both European countries. Medieval means ‘middle age’ of Europe after the fall of Rome until the renaissance. It’s a large part of European culture.

Because the "medieval period" is specific to Europe and specifically western Europe. Much like how the Heinan and Edo period are specific to Japan and so on.

Because medieval isn’t just a time period, it’s a location. Western Europe to be specific.

Hot take here: but there are actually a TON of diverse fantasy stories out there, you just aren’t consuming them. Probably because it takes more effort to, since most of the time they are written in the language the fantasy story is culturally set in, and thus one would have to find a translated version of it. For example, there are a ton of Chinese fantasy stories with English translations out there that you can read, you simply just have to do the work and find them (which isn’t to hard to do, thankfully) 😊

There are so many fantasy books with different settings! The Poppy War trilogy is set in a world based on East Asia, The Locked Tomb is set in a futuristic interplanetary empire, NK Jemisin has multiple series with different non European settings, and there are so many more

Many reasons. A lot of popular fantasy is written by British writers. Also a lot of the origins of fantasy come from British folklore. Nobody is stopping anyone doing anything different.

Because the themes that define medieval fantasy usually come from English or Celtic stories, legends and myths. It isn’t just because of the setting.
