@calmmoneycoach: Paying for Old Age in Canada: What It Actually Costs (and How to Fund It) Aging care in Canada doesn’t have one price. A subsidized bed runs about $25,000 a year. Round-the-clock care at home can run north of $200,000. So the real question isn’t how do I pay, it’s which one are we even talking about. Here’s the part that should lower your blood pressure: the subsidized system is income-tested. Lower income means a smaller bill, not a bigger crisis, and your home is generally protected. Whatever your situation, the toolkit is the same. The Medical Expense Tax Credit on care fees. The Disability Tax Credit, which dementia almost always qualifies for and you can claim back 10 years. And spend order, because near the GIS a dollar from your RRIF can cost you 3x what the same dollar from your TFSA does. Then the part for every single person watching, renter or owner: a will, a power of attorney for property, and one for personal care. Sign all three while you still can. The full guide and the calculator that runs your own numbers are in the Calm Money Community. Link in bio. Education, not advice. Saw an article about retiring at 58 and having it affect your cpp calculation because of so many zero years if you wait until 65 or 70 even with the increase - could you please discuss?

It took over a year for my Grandmother to get a subsidized bed, not acceptable considering what we pay in taxes, it would have made more sense to move to the states than pay for private care here

Yep. My aunt’s dementia care cost close to $100,000 a year as she was on a waitlist for subsidized care but couldn’t safely be at home. I thank the heavens she had the money to swing it.
