Unity is not nous, nor is it less than nous: it is supra-noetic (hypernoetos), for it transcends every definable categorical determination. Ultimate reality is perfect unity, beyond the distinction between subject and object, and beyond every predicamental determination. Lacking nothing, it surpasses all things. It is that in relation to which every nous constitutes only a limited participation, as infinite structuring produced through the henadic mediation according to its own nature . Whatever is not the One by the One exists by participation, and the noetic as such is not the highest analogue of reality, but a mediated mode of infinity by the perfection of simplicity. This conception finds its roots in Plotinian metaphysics. Plotinus, in Enneads VI.9.3, raises this principle to the level of transcendent absolute and perfect simplicity: the One (to hen) surpasses even Intellect (nous), which belongs to noetic reality as structured being, together with its correlate, intelligible Being. The constitutive duality of Intellect as thinking subject and object thought, or as knower and known, disqualifies it from the role of first principle, since such a principle must be wholly one (holos hen), because every multiplicity presupposes something simpler and more unitary. The One therefore transcends the subject-object correlation that characterizes noetic knowledge, and thus also transcends predication and cognition themselves. Unity is, of course, more perfect than any predicate: eternal unreferenced activity of presence as simplicity, and superabundance as that same pure unreferenced activity. Crucially, Plotinus attributes to the One a form of transcendent self-awareness: “it is not, so to speak, unconscious; rather, all things proceed from it and remain in subjects through their ultimate principle; it is complete self-discernment; life is in it, and all things are in it through its activity, and its unity as activity (katanoesis) of itself is itself, existing through a kind of self-awareness (sunaisthesis) in eternal repose according to nature and in an intellection different from the intellection of Intellect.” This beyond-thought (hupernoesis) is not discursive self-consciousness but absolute concentration (epibole) as self-identity with itself, a luminosity without object beyond intentionality and composition.
