it might help to think of it less as handing something over for judgment and more like placing a message into circulation; into a world that was always going to interpret it imperfectly anyway, because writing is never received as it is, only as it meets the reader’s own history. + there’s an illusion that withholding something keeps it pure but writing is not a sealed artifact, it is a living thing that only completes one half of its biology in solitude. the other half happens in the mind of someone. someone else who is not you, someone who will inevitably mishear it in ways you never predicted, and in those mishearings you will learn how large your work actually is
