In 1988, a sound recordist named Keiko Tanaka working freelance in Osaka received a project brief with no production company name, no director credit, and no shooting schedule. Only a location — an abandoned ironworks built into a hillside in Shimane prefecture, Meiji era, left to rust — and a single instruction typed at the bottom of the page:

Tanaka showed up. She later wrote in a session log recovered from a storage auction in Kobe in 2015: "there were twelve of us on the first day. on the last day I counted seven. nobody left. I just stopped seeing them." What was shot over eleven days was 33 minutes of Princess Mononoke footage built around two figures navigating the space between a human settlement and a forest the camera treated as a third character. Every time the frame included both the ironworks and the tree line simultaneously, the negative developed with a line of interference running exactly between them. The colorist's lab note: "this is not a processing error. the interference is in the image itself. something in the location was dividing the frame." The pilot aired on a cable channel in Shimane, June 6th 1988. Runtime: 33 minutes. No scheduling entry. No authorization. A viewer wrote to the broadcaster describing a figure visible at the forest edge in the final scene — standing still, watching the settlement, not the girl the camera was following. The broadcaster's response, stamped and filed: "no such figure appears in the broadcast record." The broadcast record for that night is four minutes shorter than the runtime. Tanaka's session log has entries for eleven shooting days. The entry for day six is in a different handwriting from the rest.
