Jessie is an adorable little 6 year old Aussie that came to us from another rescue because she is heartworm positive. She has completed all of her treatments now, and has less than 45 days left to be on crate rest. While heartworms were the primary concern with Jessie when she first arrived, we are wondering if she also has Cushing’s. She is scheduled to be tested this week. Cushing’s is a common endocrine disorder that usually affects middle age dogs. Cushing’s can be hard to recognize in rescue dogs, because many of the symptoms can also be thought to be caused by other things. Pot bellied appearance could also be parasitic worms, fur loss could be flea dermatitis, greater appetite could result from having access to regular food, frequent urination could be an existing UTI, excessive thirst could be prior lack of access to readily available water, and panting and low energy could be they are heartworm positive. Cushing’s in dogs generally has 3 causes: Pituitary-Dependent (80% to 85% of cases), Adrenal-Dependent (15% to 20% of cases), and Iatrogenic Cushing's (Medication-induced). Treatment is typically either medication management, or in the case of adrenal tumors, an adrenalectomy. If you are interested in adding Jessie to your home, please complete an adoption application.
