These two gaits are both lopes, but they serve different purposes and need to look clearly different in the show pen. Your horse’s lope should look natural, like they’re on a ranch covering ground without wasting energy. Judges are looking for a calm, collected, 3-beat gait. The horse should move relaxed and forward, not sluggish but not rushing. They want to see softness, rhythm, and self-carriage, the horse should look like it’s doing the job willingly and comfortably. The Extended Lope is where you ask your horse to reach out and cover more ground, like you’re picking up the pace to get somewhere across the pasture. Judges are looking for a clear difference from the regular lope. The stride should be longer, not just faster. The horse drives more from behind and opens up through the front. The horse still needs to stay balanced and quiet, with no rushing, hollowing out, or breaking gait. Ember in not in working condition. I’m pretty happy with this from her. Once we get her back into work we can focus on slowing her down and relaxing her regular lope just a bit more. Her extended lope isn’t bad at all.
