The First NITEL Office in Nigeria ,The Cable Office, Marina, Lagos (1896) Long before mobile phones, internet connectivity, and instant messaging, this remarkable building stood at the heart of Nigeria’s earliest telecommunications network. Pictured here is the historic Cable Office at Marina, Lagos, established in 1896, serving as one of the most important communication hubs in colonial Nigeria. The Cable Office was responsible for transmitting and receiving telegraphic messages through undersea cables that linked Lagos to Britain and other parts of the world. At a time when communication between continents could take weeks by sea, the telegraph revolutionized the exchange of government dispatches, commercial information, and personal messages. This facility would eventually become part of the foundation upon which Nigeria’s telecommunications sector was built, later evolving through the Post and Telecommunications Department (P&T) and eventually into the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL). From this modest beginning on Marina, the story of modern communication in Nigeria began. Looking at this photograph today, it is difficult to imagine that one of the nation’s most significant technological transformations started from a single cable office overlooking the Lagos waterfront. It remains a powerful reminder of Lagos’ historic role as Nigeria’s gateway to innovation, commerce, and global connectivity. #HistoricalLagos #MarinaLagos #NITELHistory #OldLagos #NigerianHeritage
