In IWTV the show, I noticed how Louis would ignore him while reading and Lestat got so triggered. I thought it was a call back to Gabrielle never teaching him and basically shutting him out the same way.

I never read the books so all I know about his mother is from the show but she is definitely giving the vibe of "forced to be a mother by society in order to survive" so I'm not surprised she couldn't be bothered to teach him.

It also makes me think of in season 1 when Louis criticized him by saying something like, “Should I be like you then? Read the first ten pages of every book and pass myself off as cultured?” Knowing Lestat’s background, that’s such a mean thing to say 😭

I love interpreting Gabrielle’s not teaching Lestat to read as a part of her kind of keeping her power in a way, it’s the only thing she can hold over them in this time period, that she can read and they cannot. Considering how frustrated Gabrielle felt with her own powerlessness due to her sex, her withholding the one “powerful” thing she has makes sense

one of my favorite small things from the books that i doubt will be kept was that after lestat was turned and given magnus’s fortune, he would send his nieces and nephews birthday gifts and dollhouses, even though he hated their parents. i think that’s why i liked the village revolt in the books, where lestat learns later that his whole family died, after hating them and never seeing them again yet still caring enough to want to spoil the children.

as someone that had to attend speech therapy, because they were 7 speaking with the vocabulary of a 3 year old, it makes perfect sense that Lestat would be a book worm after learning how to read. I could not shut up once I was able to talk to my peers; it gives a feeling of freedom when one learns a skill with language.

People can’t understand the value being able to read had. We’re pending towards having things read TO US so it’s… a thing

There's also this clear pattern on how he acts on Claudia as well, he doesn't know any better and I guess that's also why he hides so much from her as well

tbh nothing has been said that he CAN read yet. from what we’ve seen of him as a human so far is he barely spoke because of his stutter and i can also imagine reading is something he didn’t have access to

While reading the book, I was infuriated by the fact that Gabrielle didn't teach Lestat to read, and when he learned to read himself and wanted to share her passion, she didn't want to discuss books with him. I'm halfway through the Lestat book and I think Louis was a terrible partner for Lestat and triggered his memories of his mother with his coldness.

I just wish we would stop blowing past these parts!! I feel like so far we’re just rushing towards Queen of the Damned but Lestat’s story is SO GOOD they would be so remiss to do everything as short flashbacks

I love the character trait that she doesn’t teach any of her kids to be literate because her literacy was really the only kind of agency and power she had over the lot of them.

I have read all the books. I will die on this hill. Gabrielle is the worst character. She is rarely shown and almost always it seems as an after thought. she truly doesn't care about Lastat. there was a few times where you think oh maybe but nah. As a father anyone who treats their child like that at any age is bad. dont even get me started about when he grew up. in the books they cant do it but the show doesn't care about subtext. I remember asking my mom (who read these books first) if Lastat is banging his mom and she laughed and said "No but it sure seems like it right" Freud would love Lastat and Gabrielle

I think the only real problem with the change is that it doesn’t communicate the power is mother maintained over him. if there is a way to use him, that’s what mama is gonna do

i like that they clearly took the time to notate that those who are classically uneducated in this way, usually develop a stress stutter. my grandpa was illiterate his whole life, and when faced with issues surrounding that, he would stutter. i think utilizing it in the show does make a good visual, but it also drives home the mental trauma he still suffers from his past as an illiterate human. it also highlights why lestat feels how he does about being a vampire
