In January of 1980, Rick Kamins invited a handful of friends from his doctoral programto come play Dungeons and Dragons, a fantasy role-playing game that had only come out several years earlier. Six of the OG players — Kamins, Rhonwyn Carson, Martin Haygood, Jim Maddux, Pat Rippetoe and Mary Lou Shelton — have continued the annual tradition for decades. “Dungeons & Dragons is not a game with a definite ending, but an adventure with a mission that the group needs to accomplish, similar to ‘The Lord of the Rings’ where they had to find and destroy the last ring,” Maddux said. “We have not yet accomplished our mission, and therefore need to keep playing until we do, which could actually take several years.
