Gamal Abdel Nasser wasn’t just the president of Egypt after the 1952 revolution — he was leading a huge economic project that aimed to turn Egypt from a poor agricultural country controlled by landlords and foreign influence into an independent industrial state. During his rule, Egypt went through major changes in farming, industry, education, and infrastructure, and the impact of that era is still visible today. One of his biggest achievements was the land reform laws. Large amounts of land were taken from wealthy landowners and redistributed to poor farmers, which weakened the old feudal system and improved the lives of many rural families. The government also supported farmers with agricultural cooperatives, loans, seeds, and fertilizers. In industry, Nasser pushed hard for industrialization led by the state. Hundreds of factories were built in steel, textiles, cement, chemicals, medicine, and engineering. Big projects like Helwan Iron and Steel Company became symbols of Egypt’s industrial growth. The government also expanded military and engineering industries to reduce dependence on foreign countries. The biggest project of his era was definitely the Aswan High Dam. It became a symbol of national independence and development. The dam provided electricity to huge parts of the country, helped control flooding, improved irrigation, and supported both agriculture and industry. In 1956, Nasser made the famous decision to nationalize the Suez Canal Authority, giving Egypt full control over the canal’s revenues after years of foreign control. That move was seen as a major political and economic turning point. Education also expanded a lot during his rule. University education became free, and many schools and universities were built. The government also increased public sector jobs, social programs, and public housing, which helped many poor and middle-class Egyptians improve their living conditions. Still, Egypt’s economy faced serious problems later on, especially after the Six-Day War in 1967, which caused heavy economic and military losses. Nasser’s economic system was also criticized for bureaucracy and heavy government control. Even with all that, a lot of people still see Nasser’s era as the period that laid the foundation for modern Egypt and many of the country’s major industries and infrastructure projects #naseer #egypt #socialism #nationalism_Arabic
