something to consider is that a 2000 year old text would have to be copied down probably 40+ times to get to us. A book doesn't last much more than 50ish years. A lot of texts didn't make the cut all 40 times and that's how we lost most.

Love your content as always. As you have studied/researched history via ancient texts have you picked up much ancient language Greek/Latin that you can read at least a bit without translation. It wouldn’t surprise me if you had picked some up just from your level of exposure. I had to study Latin at school and 30 years later some of it is still stuck in me.

Wasn’t it more that the retranslation of the Arabic translation of the Greeks that then got published in printed form that triggered the renaissance, ie gave more people access to information that couldn’t be gate kept by the church.

That's kinda the thing, there's a very pervasive myth that a lot of these texts were lost in the West, because it was the dark ages up until the Renaissance... Then you find out that, no, a LOT of them were still being studied and rewritten by hand in monasteries, and the Dark ages are called that because we know a LOT of Church history, maybe broad brush at highest society level, and lower levels require the sparse dig sites from that era that are sometimes just imprints of housing foundations.
