“Are you taking omeprazole and an iron supplement? There’s something important you should know. Omeprazole belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors, or PPIs. It reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Iron absorption, especially from some oral iron supplements, can be affected when stomach acid is reduced. So, if someone is using omeprazole regularly, their body may not absorb certain forms of iron as efficiently. This does NOT mean you should stop your omeprazole or your iron supplement. They may both be necessary depending on your condition. If you have been prescribed both, let your pharmacist or doctor know that you are taking them together.
