Byzantine was Greek and not truly Roman regions still had allegiance to the pope in Rome and not Constantinople. They weren’t able to make Greek the dominant language throughout the region. To insult them they would be called Greek I forgot who but but one of their emperor was called the Emperor of the Greeks and not Romans. It also didn’t help when Islam came to the regions and then the Normans

I think that the identity of the Byzantines is not the be all and end all of what they are, in the same way that how others see them isn't. Plenty of very self important states and cultures see themselves a certain way, but that doesn't mean it's objective. The Byzantines were not from Rome, mostly didn't own Rome, didn't speak Latin, had a very Hellene culture, mostly didn't own any of Italy, and didn't have the classic religion of the Romans. Is Taiwan "the real" China just because they feel they are and say they are? I think it's fair to say that they're certainly Roman successors, but they're obviously not Rome Rome just because they identified that way

Favorite anecdote around this was when Greek soldiers were occupying some Aegean islands around WW1 or WW2 The local Greek-speaking people came out to see them and the soldiers asked why. The locals said they came to see Hellenes (Greeks). The soldiers replied 'Aren't you also Hellenes?' to which the locals said 'No, we're Romans'

Yeah they're technically the Roman empire... but lets keep calling them Byzantines too. Because Romans sans Rome that's confusing as hell and we need a distinction.

The whole reason large empires were possible is because they espoused multiculturalism. Mono-cultural, mono-ethnic states can only ever be as large as their native populations - which is going to always be smaller than the potential combination of multiple ethnicities and cultures. Probably the only example of a mono-ethnic empire was China, but only for periods of its history and only because it already absorbed and mixed its initial populations together since thousands of years ago

Happy someone is finally sticking up for the ‘byzantine’ empire. No. Its the roman empire. Even the ottomans when they conquered constantinople saw it as conquering the roman empire.

Rome has levels of their citizens tho. From the city to republic to empire. Who was more Roman dependent on how close they were to Rome it was 4 or 5 obviously 1st was those from the city Rome Latins 2nd was those on the peninsula then 3rd was those close to the peninsula. Then the 4th/5th was the east and west. Roman did just mean citizen of the empire bc everyone wants treated the same. Apart from class obviously. But Latins/ italics(mostly Latins) were “more Roman”

the eastern roman empire evolved to a greek empire, they spoke greek, their laws were written in greek and not in Latin like the western Roman empire. the last emperor of the eastern roman empire in his last speech before the fall of constantinople calls himself greek and Roman. The title Roman was like calling someone European. The greeks who started the revolution against the Ottoman empire in 1821 almost 400 years after the fall of constantinople were saying that they were fighting for their emperor( the last emperor of the eastern roman empire)

I do think one of the most interesting things about the Byzantines being Roman is that when Christianity was spreading, people in the Greek cities adopted it first and began identifying as Roman before Hellenes. Being Greek was seen as still being pagan and backwards, like a rural farmer sort.
