@mikeinburien: Tongariki Part 2.#moai #easterisland #rapanui The interesting backstory on many of the now standing moai is that after the island war where virtually all the moai were toppled, as it turns out a Japanese industrial company brought in heavy equipment during the 1980s and restored many of the ahu platforms and stood the moai back up. Some of the moai had their heads broken off during the toppling and you can see where some of them have cracked necks where the head broke off.

My dad was in the Chilean navy and the navy used to be in charge of that island up until mid 60s. Its a very strategic location. Thankfully they started recognizing the indigenous people that lived there and backed off the military control and gave the people on the island Chilean citizenship
