Tipping is based because it puts the power of price directly in the consumers hands (solves the knowledge problem) and incentivizes better service. It is an imperfect institution, but the alternatives like mandatory service fees or higher wages result in even worse service.

I only tip at places I plan to come back to often and its because I want good service and even then I dont believe on percentile tipping. ill usually tip 5-10$ max. If you have 2 to 3 tables an hour and they all tip you 10$ you are making a good wage congrats you dont need 20% on a 100% bill from one table. im so tired of seeing servers bragging about 40-50$ an hour in a short 6hr shift then coming on here and complaining about getting stiffed on tips.
