I thought Islam viewed things like respecting the rights of LGBT people, so I believed that Muslims who were racist, discriminatory, or violent toward LGBT individuals were acting based on their own personal beliefs rather than the teachings of Islam. But when people showed me verses and religious texts that they interpreted as allowing or even obligating the killing of LGBT people and their partners, I was shocked. Seeing those passages felt horrifying to me. Because of that, I became skeptical again and chose to identify as an atheist once more. 😕 I couldn't accept what I saw as such a disturbing way of thinking, especially when I believe that everyone deserves basic human rights.
