I do need to know like. Have the parents brought up the back pay at all since? Cuz they mentioned that they didn’t pay it when they were unemployed, I genuinely wonder if their kid like. Knows they owe this money still? Did they think the parents were waiving the rent for those months while they searched for a job? Idk I need a lot more information, personally. But I am leaning towards YTA, with a big push towards “everyone sucks here” depending on how aware of the debt their child is.

If they are paying what you’re asking of them for rent, then whatever they spend the rest of their money on, is none of your business. If they are not paying rent then they shouldn’t be spending money on hobbies when bills are due

I don’t understand charging rent to your children, that would be insane in my culture regardless of age. It also is just another obstacle to saving. I can understand groceries because that’s a lot of people but even then it seems unfair to charge the youngest because at 20 they should be focusing on studying and having fun.

Also they’re not “behind” on rent necessarily. The parents clearly said they didn’t have to pay it while they weren’t working then wanted it later. The parents kinda put them in this situation. But, yes, they should pay it back if that’s what they agreed to. But this event also seems unique so maybe be lenient? Idk, this seems weird to me.

1. OP doesn’t mention a payment plan for the back rent. Didn’t they establish something like that. 2. Op wants their child to act like an adult and take responsibility for the money they owe to their parents but also mentions grounding their adult child. I don’t get it.

Parents are TA. She says they owe back rent but doesn’t mention any kind of payment plan in place that they are missing payments on. As long as they are paying their 100$/week it’s not really up to the parents how they spend the remaining money. If they want to have a conversation on timeline for moving out or paying “back rent” (which is super petty btw) then that’s something they need to do in the future - not as a reaction to an event

This is such a weird concept to me. In my culture you don't charge your kids anything for living with you. I have a part time job with my university studies and they don't like that because I should spend all my time focusing on my studies. Plus they actually want me to stay with them for as long as possible.

It’s always made sense to me if parents charge their kids a reasonable small amount of rent to pay for living as they are consuming resources, but only if they have a job. So doing the backpay thing for 350 dollars when they weren’t working is kinda shitty especially when OP is aware of the job market and said they weren’t given more hours at the moment

The main problem here is how the not paying rent worked. Was there agreement where the expectation of paying the rent back or mom said don't worry with rent until you get a job.

My thing is as a parent and at that age I totally get making them pay “rent” but also you’re their parents if they lost their job for a month I wouldn’t count that. That’s the benefit of living with your parents.
