@omgitsgale: struggling with how little POSITIVE sapphic rep there is in visual media STILL and how difficult it is for these things to get greenlit/made 🤧💜🌈 #lgbtq #wlw #sapphic #queermedia #girlslikegirls

i thought it was a very sweet coming of age movie! my fiance cried a lot through it because it was a huge deal for her to see it on the big screen after holding the book close to her all these years.

I needed this film growing up. I remember seeing the music video when it came out; it was the first time I could relate to that as a young queer kid. Seeing this film made my queer kid self cry. I know some people think the film was open ended and the post credit scene didn’t show anything from the music video but it felt complete to me. Seeing Hayley’s journey of song to music video to book and finally to a film made it complete. The audience watches the film and should be encouraged to watch the video that started it all.

It was giving YouTube short film, cute but not great. And really rushed everything so we didn’t have time really getting into the feelings with the characters

The movie was not based off the book. It’s based off the music video. Hayley Kiyoko stated this. That’s why it’s not the same.

Yeah as a lesbian unfortunately I was NOT a fan. Loved the idea of it, and loved the characters individually, but there were too many pieces that didn’t tie together correctly / smoothly. There were necessary bits and pieces that didn’t get the resolve we needed! And missed out on a lot of Sonya’s perspective as well. Personally, I would’ve taken a whole different route with these lively characters.

It was so good. Basically my teenage years finally represented in film. I can’t believe it took 30 years for me.

I’ve really tried to put it in perspective of the reality of being a girl who liked girls in 2006. There was NO representation at all. She really dialed into the time period. How Coley felt is EXACTLY how I felt in 2006 with my first crush. It was actually really incredible to see and I felt like my inner teenager was shown on the big screen…20 years later.

is it a perfect movie? no. but it’s a decent coming of age movie and honestly? better than i expected it to be. i didn’t expect the heartfelt moments between coley and her dad and i thought the chemistry between coley and sonya was really quite good, they managed to capture the exact feeling of that homoerotic friendship turned lovers in your teenage years and they got a cute happy ending! we need this movie it’s a step in the right direction

This is part of the problem this review. We need to support lesbian art so there can be more. How hard is it for women to get something made in Hollywood let alone lesbian artists/ work…. We need to do our part to get more representation

i’m really disappointed because it just felt like every piece of sapphic media where they are only happy at the end for not even 5 minutes😭 i keep seeing people say they are gonna go support so we can get more queer media but we also have to acknowledge when it’s bad and needs to be better because that’s what we deserve

I think that people need to separate book from movie, once you do that you realize the movie was good as a stand alone. Or even think of it more as a continuation of the music video. Books are hard to get good adaptations as a movie because it’s hard to fit so much from a book into a limited time frame of a movie. Y’all went in with book expectations and set yourself up for failure to be honest, I liked it because I didn’t expect it to be the book and just expected it to be a cute teen coming of age romance and that’s what it was

I swear when it comes to lesbian movies, y’all tear them apart no matter what. The movie was great. She was showing what it was like in 2006, when there was barely any representation for LGBTQ+ people. You can’t judge it by today’s standards without considering the time it was set in. I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion, but do y’all actually want more movies like this? Because constantly hating on the movie is getting anywhere

To compare the stories of heated rivalry and girls like girls is a bit deeper than that though because the main reason HR was so popular was because it was fetishized. The main cast didn’t mind being objectified. It got attention but not for the right reasons.
