The humble rib might be the most powerful shaping tool in your pottery toolkit... but it's also one of the easiest to misuse. Too much pressure and you'll rip, twist, or even collapse your walls. The secret isn't force—it's control. Here's what I focus on: • Hold the rib at roughly a 30° angle to the surface of the pot. • Keep the exterior well-lubricated so the rib glides instead of drags. • Support the wall with your inside hand to create gentle counter-pressure. • Let the spinning clay move past the rib—don't force the rib into the clay. Once you've established that smooth, controlled contact, the real shaping begins. Press outward from the inside to expand the form, inward with the rib to refine the silhouette, or combine both movements to create unique, one-of-a-kind profiles. If you ever feel the rib starting to stick or chatter, stop. Add a little more water with a sponge and reset before continuing. Mastering a rib isn't about using more pressure—it's about learning to work with the clay, not against it. What rib is your go-to in the studio? #harleyweiglestudio #potterytutorials
