Riley is fed. He’s clean. He’s cosy. He’s finally settled. I climb into bed and close my eyes. And instead of thinking, I’m going to sleep, a little part of my brain starts wondering… When will he wake? Will it be an hour? Two? Will I even get comfortable before I hear him again? After enough broken nights, you start anticipating the wake up before it happens. And I hate that. Because bedtime should feel like relief. It should feel like the end of the day. Instead, sometimes it feels like preparing for another shift. Another night of feeding. Another night of rocking. Another night of checking the clock and trying to remember how many hours are left until morning. But I’ve realised I don’t need to know how the whole night is going to go. I just need to get through the next wake up. And then the next one. And when I start feeling like I’m the only mum awake in the world, I look at the little lights. Mums everywhere. Some just putting their babies down. Some already awake. Some feeding. Some cuddling. Some probably wondering how they’re going to make it through tomorrow too. And suddenly the night feels a little less intimidating. Because even when I’m sitting in my dark room with a sleeping baby against my chest, there are other lights on all around the world. Other mums are awake. Other mums are doing their best. Other mums are loving their babies through the same long hours. So tonight, I’m not going to count the wake ups. I’m not going to worry about what tomorrow looks like. I’m just going to take it one moment at a time. And if the night gets long… I’ll look for the lights. 💛 #newmom #momlife #postpartum #motherhood #momcommunity
