Subsurface drip irrigation is buried drip tape a foot below ground that delivers water directly to the root zones of plants. A pump and controller station controls how much water is delivered to each zone of the field.  -Why SDI? Drip irrigation is most beneficial in irregular shaped fields that can’t be irrigated by a circle pivot. It is also beneficial when you have limited water, as it is much more efficient than other irrigation systems, delivering the water right to the root zone and avoiding most evaporation. With subsurface drip irrigation, you can minimize weed growth, reduce herbicide usage, apply customized nutrients, and irrigate any field shape or soil type. -Cost? $2,000/ac to $3,000/ac depending on field shape and options -Return? In our part of Kansas, irrigated ground is worth twice as much as dry land, so simply by converting my acres to irrigated, I have increased the value of my land from $3,500/ac to $7,000/ac. My drip irrigation will *theoretically* double my average yield of corn, soybeans, and wheat leading to a significant increase in profit per acre, easily paying for itself in 5-10 years. Even when not converting dry land to irrigated, yields should increase when converting a pivot or flood irrigation due to water efficiency and being able to deliver fertilizer right to the roots and/or irrigating extra acres in the field. -Durability? There are multiple SDI systems in our county that have been underground for 20 years and are still going strong. This is not like above ground drip tape, it is designed to last 💪 -Plugging? The filters in the controller station eliminate foreign particles. The drip tape is designed to only push water out and not let anything in, like roots, bugs, or dirt. -Rodents? Controlling rodents is an important part of SDI management. If they chew through the tape you must dig a hole and repair it. -Winterizing? The winterizing process includes blowing air through the lines and making sure the system is ready for cold temperatures.
