Heyy guys! Here is the second part of my story I hope you will enjoy it too Jake felt a familiar knot tighten in his stomach. Another growth spurt. Another inch, another reminder of the gap widening between them. He was static, a fixed point in a world that expands. He downed his vitamin with a gulp of water, the pill feeling like a boulder in his throat. The doorbell rang, a deep, resonant chime that seemed to be tuned to a lower register.
"That's them," Maya said, grabbing her bag. She paused by Jake's chair, her shadow falling over him. She ruffled his hair, her hand large enough to cover his entire head. "Don't get lost today, little brother." "I'll try not to," he replied, the words coming out quieter than he intended. Maya laughed, a full, rich sound, and was gone. The front door closed, and the house felt suddenly empty, but bigger. Sarah came over, placing a hand on Jake's shoulder. Her palm was warm, her fingers long enough to wrap around to his collarbone. "Look, she means well," Sarah said, her voice softer now. "She's just... A kid." "I know," Jake said. He did know. Maya wasn't malicious, just... a product of her world. A world where she was destined for greatness, and he was destined to stand in her shadow, both literally and figuratively. He looked up at his mother, at the kind strength in her eyes. She had been a 6'4" teenager once, just like the girls he saw at school. Now she was a 6'11" titan of industry. Where would she stop? Where would any of them stop? He finished his breakfast in silence, the clink of his spoon against the cereal bowl the only sound. Soon, he too would have to leave, to navigate the halls of Northwood High, where 6'0" was the starting line for female ambition. He would walk among giants, a relic from a bygone era, a male in a world that had outgrown him. He rinsed his bowl, the water splashing against the sink designed for someone who could see over the rim without standing on their toes. Another day in the life. The walk to school was a familiar exercise in feeling small. Northwood High loomed ahead, its brick facade designed for a different scale of student. The main doors were massive panels of wood and glass, heavy enough that Jake had to put his shoulder into them to get them moving. A group of girls sauntered out ahead of him, laughing, their movements easy and unconcerned. They moved through the same doors with a casual push, their long limbs making it look effortless. One of them, Lily, at 6'6", spotted him. She nudged her friend, Zoey, who was a mere 6'3". They both turned, their gazes falling on him. There was no malice in it, just the casual, unthinking assessment of the larger for the smaller. Zoey smirked. "Look, it's Jakey. Trying to get in a workout before class?" Lily laughed. "Leave him alone, Zoey. He's probably just tired from reaching the top shelf this morning." They moved on, their laughter echoing behind them. Jake ignored them, focusing on the scuff marks on the linoleum floor. He was used to it. The jokes were as common as the school bell. He headed for his locker, a metal box at chest height that was a constant struggle. He spun the combination dial, the small numbers a blur. As he wrestled with the jammed door, a shadow fell over him. He didn't need to look up. The sheer presence, the subtle shift in the air pressure, was enough. "Mr. Davidson," a voice boomed, deep and resonant enough to make the locker rattle. "Having difficulties?" Jake turned. Principal Albright stood there, a monolith of authority in a perfectly tailored pantsuit. At 7'4", and yet was not the tallest woman in the school district. Her silver-streaked hair was pulled back in a severe bun, emphasizing the sharp line of her jaw and the height of her forehead. She looked down at him, her expression unreadable. "No, Ms. Albright. Just a sticky lock," Jake said, his own voice sounding thin and reedy in comparison. That's all for part 2 If you like the story let me know! Stay tuned Part 3 is coming up soon! 😊
