Vet tech here and I want to answer the question everyone seems to be asking so the user doesn’t have to over and over again. This is an oxygen cage. It delivers highly concentrated oxygen into the sealed chamber. The air around us usually only has about 21% oxygen, in these chambers we often set it so the air is double that. If the patients lungs are struggling to absorb oxygen this allows their bodies to work less and ease their breathing troubles. Since an oxygen mask doesn’t reliably stay on a dogs face, and nasal cannulas would be sneezed out or scratched away due to discomfort this is the most reliable way for your pet to easily “wear” an oxygen mask. Long comment but I also want to address the comments saying he should have just taken the dog home… though respiratory crisis is often fatal, or a sign of disease turning to a fatal point, it is also often manageable. I can’t say what’s causing this issue but it’s often heart failure. Heart failure can often be managed once the breathing is controlled and proper medications are either started or managed. So this was likely a last ditch effort to regain control of the breathing issues before making a hard decision. If it is heart failure, and he took the dog home to die “naturally” or to took it out of the oxygen cage and held it, it would have been hours of the dog gasping and gulping air with its body unable to process the oxygen. It’s called dry drowning and it’s horrific. As a society we have avoided the reality of the dying process and paint over it with a glossy idea of peace. If you truly love your pet you do whatever you can to make it comfortable until it can be euthanized. At home euthanasia is an option in some cases, but that’s often in cases where the progression is slow enough to planned, and that’s not most cases.
