he definitely wasn't the first to block, but they've explained in the show that there's 2 kinds of blocks. the soft block is what they most likely did before, to simply stop the momentum and make the ball possible to receive. but this is the first instance we see of Ushiwaka being COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN BY A BLOCK. theres a reason this moment is special

he shut the ball DOWN. Not just a simple block but he slammed the ball down. Every middle blocker in the Nationals fear Ushijima, and yet a 1st year from a no-name school, who barely gave his 60% on the 3/4 of the whole series actually blocked him.
