Makes sense icl at that point in 2018 Messi was a considered a failure for Argentina till he started winning in 2021 (credits to him.) so just imagine if Ronaldo who by then has won for his country in a harder international tournament in the euros, had just completed the 3peat and was the UCL top goalscorer in the UCL for more then the 5th consecutive year got more ballon dors than Messi at point they simply couldn’t allow it not to mention Ronaldo beat the vast majority of the teams Messi couldn’t in the UCL final (2014 atletico, 2016 Atletico and 2017 juve.), it’d look so much more worse for Messi

My biggest point for this is that during the season did a single person think modric was the best player in the world or he had the best season? No. Even if he won I don’t think he should get it but the fact he lost the finals and still won shows u it was something deeper than on the pitch

Plus the ballon dor is usually decided because of the UCL which many believed Barcelona wouldn’t win anytime soon so they went hardcore for Modric to win it. To add salt to the wound they started giving out Messi the ballon dor for being Messi
