in order to not disadvantage the people directly behind you, you need to exchange spot with the person you exchanged with, not just let her take the spot in front of you...

It's difficult to allow when there are also others queuing as you've mention. However, you could tell her to head straight to the counter or approach any duty officer for assistance if you feels there is urgency regarding her boarding. I am sure people in line wouldn't mind holding her spot.
