1000 usd per month in Russia have signigicantly higher purchase power in local prices. Say 3-4 times more than the same 1000 usd can buy in the US. And this 1000 usd is disposable income, after taxes and other staff. Health is free, car insurance is very cheap, rent is not overprices and many people own their homes. Regarding sadness, thats the weather mostly. Same as Norwegian or Finnish also have no smile culture.

The Russian economy is NOT in a mess! It is just a very different type of economy! It can not be really compared with Western economies as their roots are historically and traditionally socialistic with gigantic industrial and energy facilities. Energy, housing, food, education, health care and domestic travel is relatively cheap for the average Russian. Luxury goods are very expensive though. Please read what the World Bank, IMF or the BIS statistics expose about Russia and not the politically motivated and biased Western financial press. Russia is immensely rich in all essential resources and have recently mostly decoupled from trade with the West due the Ukraine conflict and sanctions having gained new and more reliable partners all over the rest of the world. The Western economies have comparably weakened significantly since 2008 and have not managed to recover ever since.
