Start with the need. What are we satisfying. Do we still need this and if so how would we satisfy it today?

one of my professors over a decade ago said "sometimes you need to stop solving the solution and go back to solving the problem" and I have never forgotten it because it's just so damn applicable

I love the 5 Why’s. I tell people “I’m about to become the most annoying toddler, but in the end, you’re going to have a much cleaner process.” They laugh - at first. 😏

Be so for real ✨✨ :
I’m constantly asking leadership if there are manual processes or steps in their workflows and being told No, we’re automated. Then will interview the support teams across business lines and the entire company is managed in spreadsheets and emails with manual corrections on fields. My question when we are attempting to remove manual, interventions has always was a business decision or a system limitation. I am taking notes here!

I run into this alot in corporate L&D. They come to us with a training request to solve for a break in the process but during our discovery analysis we always uncover that there is no formal process in place. Bill who has been here 20 years created this a decade ago and has taught everyone a variation of it. We need a process engineer bad.

I was a process engineer in the automotive industry before my career change to IT. Processes are significantly undervalued in IT and it drives me crazy.

Mature workarounds are fun though, to untangle, to diagram, to figure out how to fix them. Duct tape and bubble gum, with a sprinkle of code in between. It's like archaeology.

I’m an operations manager and this is helpful. Sometimes it’s hard to backup 10 years of steps that 16 people are very committed to.

So true! The 5 Whys can be tedious, but they really do paint a picture and delve into aspects that you or stakeholders may have never really considered at their core before taking next steps or actions. Instant follow.

I am the most annoying person in my company too! Being the only IT person at a 60+ year old construction company, means I ask why a lot. We have come a long way in 8 years but we are still no where close to where I feel like we should be. Love the video.

There’s so much truth and gold in what you’re saying. Unfortunately people don’t always want to correct their process because they don’t want to change the numbers and have to explain to management that they’ve been doing it wrong the whole time. At least from a data analyst perspective
