Can you help with Patient Family Caregiver program? My Veteran had a massive brainstem stroke last year, survived and the rehab hospital recommended nursing home placement for my 58 year old husband. I said no, I have help at home. Applied for this PCFAC program and was denied stating it did not appear to the local person that he would need care for longer than 6 months. He is still receiving therapy, lost his job of 30 years, needs someone close by 24/7 for multiple reasons. The local VA closed the application 10 days before the deadline and refused to allow his medical records. Today, the appeal was denied based on he did not seem to need help. He was on a platform walker, I had to help him out of bed every time, help him bathe, help him dress, and so forth. Now some of the physical improved but not internal organ issues, bowel and bladder assistance required daily due to total paralysis but that is all normal ADL’s to them. The dizziness, the lack of immediate memory, the loss of short term memory, etc. I am waiting on the actual letter to see what evidence they reviewed but I sent 1500 pages of medical records in from the hospital and rehab hospitals, plus therapists, physician nexus statements, etc and they basically said he seemed independent. Do they literally ignore that much evidence? Ugh. I will not fail this test of endurance because he served 28 years, was awarded multiple awards including the Purple Heart and this stroke is tied to all the bomb TBI injuries he suffered in Iraq and Afghanistan and they think he is independent in this separate program? UGHHHHHH. I despise that manual and the lack of care for our Veterans. I am keeping him home where he wants to be and deserves to be no matter what but this is so challenging.
