retreating to Libya, but without going to Libya🇱🇾 🕰️ Historical reference: German arrival during Operation Sonnenblume | February-May 1941 The growth of German presence in North Africa started at the given period of February-May 1941 under the name of "Operation Sonnenblume" as the result of re-capturing large parts of Libya (Cyrenaica) that the Allied forces once seized from Italy. By continuous waves of newly arrived German-Italian units in Libya, the British-Commonwealth forces were then forced to retreat to Cairo, Egypt while also holding the frontlines well fortified, namely the familiar Siege of Tobruk, Libya that would later in November 1941 end in Allied victory. Though long story short, the Axis still remains in Africa for a few extra years. The 'tactical' nightmares of the Western Desert Campaign | 1940/41-1943 Erwin Rommel a.k.a. the "Desert Fox", one of the commanders of Afrika Korps, were able to observe said ever-changing Egypt-Libya border clashes, and as well as noticing how not only Rommel's men but also the Allied soldiers were all individually affected by the desert's extreme temperature conditions, harsh terrain and the lack of landmarks to properly and strategically orient through the empty dry landscapes despite up-to-date and/or later improved maps.
