The reef around them glimmered in soft shades of green and blue, the shallow waves rolling gently across sand and coral. Light sparkled off the water's surface in fractals, scattering across their faces and arms, catching in their wet hair. Neteyam stood a few steps ahead, holding Tuk in his arms, careful and steady. Tuk wriggled a little, delight mixed with nervousness, tail flicking beneath the water. The Metkayina kids had already gathered, Ilu circling them in the shallow, making soft, high pitched clicks and whistles. Ao'nung was at the front, chest out, tail swishing through the water, gleaming in the early sunlight. "These are ilu." Ao'nung called, voice carrying over the shallow water. He clicked his tongue sharply, and the creatures responded immediately, circling faster, tails cutting the surface. "If you want to live here, you have to ride!" Brooklyn watched quietly, standing on the sandy bottom, water warm around her waist. She smiled a little at Tuk's wide eyes, still clinging to Neteyam's forearms. Lo'ak, never one to hesitate, was already stepping toward one of the ilu. The creature's sleek blue body shimmered as it arched in the water, nostrils flaring as it breathed. Tsireya moved beside him, steady hands resting lightly on his shoulders. "Feel his breath. Feel his strength." she instructed softly, voice calm but firm. Lo'ak closed his eyes, inhaling deeply. The rhythm of the ilu's breathing was steady, powerful beneath him. His hands hovered just above the creature's back, fingers stretching out as if memorising the feel of muscle under skin. "Hold here." Tsireya said, gesturing along the ridge of the ilu's back. Lo'ak's hands found purchase. He grinned, teeth flashing as he glanced back at the group. "Look at his legs." one of the Metkayina boys chuckled, water rippling around Lo'ak as his ilu shifted beneath him. Brooklyn gave the boy an eye roll, letting her eyes flick to Lo'ak. "You can do it, Lo'ak." she called, reassuringly. Lo'ak inhaled sharply, then leaned forward just slightly, nudging the ilu. The creature flicked its tail once, then surged ahead. Water erupted in gentle waves as it glided forward, fast and smooth. Lo'ak clung loosely, arms relaxed but steady, and then— just as the current caught him— the ilu lunged in a sharp arc. Lo'ak tumbled forward, disappearing briefly under the water. Ao'nung laughed underwater, tail flicking in amusement, and surfaced a moment later, grinning widely. He turned to his friends, splashing water with one arm, still laughing. Brooklyn tried not to laugh. Her shoulders shook slightly as she forced her lips closed, watching Lo'ak pop back up, dripping, hair plastered to his face. She let her gaze drift, taking in the rest of the shallow reef. The ilu swirled around the kids, some dipping under the water, some surfacing with high, gleeful chirps. Each creature was a blur of color, water, and motion, but the patterns were beautiful, controlled, natural. Neteyam was on an ilu a little farther away. Brooklyn walked slowly toward him, careful where she placed her feet over coral and sand, watching him maneuver. At first, he dipped awkwardly, gripping the creature with tension in his shoulders. His tail flicked to balance, not quite coordinating with the rhythm of the ilu. Brooklyn smiled a little, heart lightening. She knew he'd figure it out— he always did. The creature's body arched, muscles rippling, and Neteyam adjusted, weight shifting smoothly as he found the rhythm. The tail moved beneath him, gui
