@romania: Can you feel it? Brașov Citadel sits on Dealul Cetății with the disposition of an old butcher who has heard every sermon and believed none of them. Above the tidy red roofs, above the café chatter and the postcard innocence, it broods over Transylvania with brick shoulders, Saxon memory, Habsburg residue, and a view sharp enough to shave the arrogance off a traveler. The place was first mentioned in 1529, when Brașov was threatened by the forces of Petru Rareș, ruler of Moldavia. Then came the harder architecture of fear: artillery towers raised in 1553 and 1554, an outer brick bastioned enclosure completed in 1630, ditches cut into the hill, earthworks, a hexagonal tower, and the slow, unsentimental choreography of a fortress built to notice danger before danger noticed the city. Later it became a prison, a military barracks, then a storage site for the State Archives from 1955 to 1975, before being restored in 1981 into a medieval-style complex. But facts only get you to the gate. The rest is wind, lichen, vertigo, and that peculiar Romanian silence where history refuses to lie still. From up here, Brașov looks almost edible, sweet and varnished, but the citadel reminds you there was always iron under the honey.
