The fact that Corlys didn’t try this is evidence he is smart enough to not want to deal with ruling the Seven Kingdoms drama himself. Getting his descendants on the throne, less drama and also all that ruling drama will be his descendant’s problem instead of his.

I was just thinking about how wild it was that Laenor and Laena were allowed to claim dragons. I understand that their mother was a Targaryen but had the dance not happened, having two houses with dragons could have caused an even larger conflict.

This was totally the point of the Great Council: to humiliate the Velaryons and make it clear to them that Westeros didn’t want them so they didn’t try to rebel. Maegor showed that dragons aren’t enough if the whole country hates you. That’s why I’m convinced Jaehaerys rigged the vote to make it seem like Viserys won by a landslide: to trick Corlys and Rhaenys into thinking they’d never have enough support for rebellion

I disagree about meleys being stronger than caraxes. maybe in raw power but caraxes knows how to fight. meleys went down to vhagar in one strike caraxes though.... not gonna spoil it.

The only reason Corlys didnt fully rebel was Rhaenys, im sure Corlys and Boremond Baratheon were all for it, the ONLY REASON They didnt is Rhaenys telling them not to, Viserys has his crown because Rhaenys was the only one to actually learn from her grandparents that the only way that house Targaryen survives in a foreign country is as a unit.

In my opinion this is why Visery’s refused to change the succession and stood firm on Rhaenyra’s children’s legitimacy. Once he pissed Corly’s off he likely knew a second time would’ve lead to conflict. He solved the issue and then created a knew one 😂 The velaryon’s were much more of a threat at that point than the Hightower. They had dragons, the largest fleet in Westeros and were the richest house in the seven kingdoms.

True but then we return to the same dilemma Daenerys was faced with later: a dragon may help you win the iron throne, he will not help you keep it. For all his faults Viserys was the ruler that most of the realm agreed with. If Corlys tried claiming the throne either for himself or for Rhaenys, he’d then have to contend with the Hightowers going absolutely apeshit and bringing most of the major houses of westeros to Viserys' side. And dragons and wealth or not, I cannot imagine the Velaryons holding the realm against Hightowers, Tyrells, Lannisters, Tullys, Baratheons, Arryns and Starks for very long. Even the mighty Velaryon fleet is outmatched if the Redwynes and Lannisters combine theirs

Corlys Velaryon might not have usurped Viserys but he came very close to usurping house Targaryen. At one point there were as many Velaryon dragon riders as Targaryen dragon riders and if Viserys had never allowed his 4 younger children to claim dragons (as many in the fandom wish he did) then house Velaryon would have been a greater dragon riding house than the actual house of the dragon. Rheanyras sons were still all born with the name Velaryon and despite Jace needing to take the name Targaryen upon becoming King there were no measures taken in the marriage agreement to ensure the Velaryons didnt gain too many dragons. A lot of fans criticize that Aemond wasnt punished for claiming Vhagar without Viserys permission on driftmark without realizing or caring that the political ramifications of not punishing Laena Velaryon for claiming the greatest Targaryen dragon currently alive while punishing the kings own son for the same thing could have potentially turned many people against him.
