Therapist here: you didn’t choose the patterns you keep repeating, it is not your fault. They were pushed onto your younger version in order to feel safe or to stay loved. Unfortunately, I think this just comes down to compatibility. And you can love someone and ultimately just not be compatible in how you love someone. It does suck, but there is also someone out there who will love you and show you in a way that makes you feel it.

I fear people really overlook the importance of learning how the person they love receives love and wants to be loved. I think the need for the "Google translate" middle person wouldn't be there if we sat down and asked each other "what makes you feel loved and how do you receive it?" that way both parties can be content and properly feel each others love. It would reduce so much of the frustration and underlying resentment that builds up in relationships.
