Unless we fix the cost and reliability of electricity, significantly increase power generation capacity to support industrialization, expand manufacturing, and support local cottage industries, roads and housing alone will never be sustainable drivers of economic growth. Infrastructure is important, but it is often used as visible proof that a government is working while the real foundations of a strong economy are neglected.
The true pillars of long-term prosperity are affordable and abundant energy, productive industries, quality healthcare, and a strong education system. These sectors create skilled workers, healthy citizens, innovation, and sustainable jobs. No country has achieved meaningful industrialization without investing heavily in electricity generation and ensuring that power remains affordable for businesses and households.
When healthcare and education are struggling, and manufacturers face high production costs due to expensive energy and taxation, economic growth becomes difficult to sustain regardless of how many roads are built. Kenya must prioritize increasing electricity generation capacity, lowering energy costs, promoting value addition in agriculture, supporting SMEs, and creating an environment where industries can flourish.
Kenya's future depends on getting these priorities right. Without affordable energy, industrial expansion, strong healthcare, and quality education, physical infrastructure alone cannot deliver broad-based prosperity or improve the living standards of ordinary citizens.
