CAT MATLALA COURT UPDATE | 8 SEPTEMBER 2026 Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his co-accused, including Musa Kekana, appeared in the Johannesburg High Court today as the court continued dealing with a trial within a trial. The court ruled that Kekana’s previous bail proceedings and affidavits can be admitted as evidence in the case. The State argued that the earlier statements are relevant because they contain versions of events that can be compared with his current account. The defence has been challenging the circumstances surrounding Kekana’s arrest and the evidence allegedly obtained afterwards. The defence also introduced new evidence concerning the location of police vehicles on the day Kekana was arrested. The State said it needed time to examine the new information and determine whether an additional police witness should be called. The potential witness is currently hospitalised after being shot in an unrelated incident. The judge granted the State additional time, meaning the matter was postponed to Thursday, 10 September 2026. There was also chaos outside the courtroom after the postponement. Kekana’s legal team complained that they were prevented from consulting with him and alleged that he was pushed and pulled while being taken to the cells. Judge Cassim Moosa subsequently ordered that the accused must be given proper access to their lawyers and warned that unreasonable interference could potentially amount to contempt of court. Matlala, Kekana and the other accused face a combined 25 charges, including conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder and money laundering.
