Well said. It also shows up in the tendency of people to police each other to conform to rules and social norms through criticism, reporting ("snitching"), monitoring behavior, and rigid enforcement. Rules over common sense in order to protect conformity over authenticity.

This is 💯 true. The entire society and systems and people are so oppressed and suppressed. I keep grappling with this. I was thinking they need some pride of their country or some societal self esteem or something but you are much more accurate in describing what it is I’m seeing and sensing. Like some undercurrent of shame and self loathing and self flagellation.

Nobody is taught shame. We get taught that it's not our fault, but since it's part of our history, we have the responsibility to prevent it from happening again. If people are saying we get educated into the feeling of guilt, they are lying.

As a German, I agree with you on almost everything; however, generalized statements really bother me, and in some cases, the comments on such posts turn racist. Language matters—it’s where everything begins—and painting an entire country and all its inhabitants with the same brush is one reason why there is still so much hate in the world; we need to learn to make distinctions.
