@yazmit___: Mononoke 2006 is the most visually radical thing ever put on television and I think about it constantly. Every frame is a woodblock print that’s been infected. The backgrounds aren’t backgrounds — they’re pattern, texture, gold leaf, negative space used the way Klimt used it. There’s no naturalism anywhere. Colour doesn’t describe the scene, it is the scene. Most animation tells you where you are. Mononoke tells you what the space feels like — dread rendered in flat vermillion, grief in washed indigo, wrong-ness in a gold that’s too bright to look at directly. If you study colour in any discipline — architecture, interiors, graphic design — this is the reference you didn’t know you were missing. It proves that abstraction isn’t a stylistic choice, it’s an emotional one. The 2024 film just dropped. Start with the series.
