Obroni Wawu means "dead white man's clothes". The term arose around in Ghana - initially because locals believed that the only reason someone would give away such an abundance of clothing was if they were deceased. These colonial power dynamics persist today. 15 million used garments enter Kantamanto each week from countries including the UK, USA, Germany and France - a result of Big Fashion's greedy oversupply, and our excessive consumption, carefree "donations" and throwaway culture. #ObroniWawuOctober is an annual festival that celebrates the Kantamanto community, showcasing upcycling and thrift culture in Ghana. It’s a stunning demonstration of people who deeply understand and appreciate the true value of clothes and textiles, transforming cast-offs into the freshest fits I’ve ever seen! Despite these incredible efforts, Big Fashion brands refuse to acknowledge - let alone pay for - their efforts, and refuse to listen to their demands. One of which is @Kantamanto Is Open!'s #SpeakVolumes campaign, which is asking brands of all sizes to disclose their annual production numbers by Black Friday 2025.
