Have I just never found the right therapist or are you the needle in a haystack? I don’t think the majority of therapists think this way. And this is exactly how people can wind up in therapy for years and years, and still remain pretty stuck.

But how can you “open up” those feelings without thinking about them? Like don’t feelings just…happen? Like I don’t have to “feel” my back pain, is just there.

This is why EMDR has worked for me. I excel at intellectualization, so much so that therapists have been confused what to do with me and it wasn’t until EMDR that my symptoms actually started to transform. I have been recently retraumatized though so I have more work to do lol

Non-dominant handwriting works well for accessing the feeling.

But how am I supposed to figure out what to do without talking about it? Like, even if the answer is just shake it off, how do I learn how without discussing it? I got nearly killed numerous times growing up by feeling it. How do I learn how to do just that without discussing it? LMFAO

I find in my experience that I will learn about some pattern of mine until I understand it and where it comes from then I begin to notice it more on my daily life and when I notice it I try to feel it and and stay with it (she also has a video on doing this, very helpful) and it’ll let me know why it’s here then I understand it and feel it, let it throw its tantrum in my body while I sit with the discomfort and then it starts to disappear. The next time it happens it feels less overwhelming. Though at times I do need help co regulating because my brain likes to believe themselves stories sometimes hahaha

I had a good experience with EMDR, feeling the emotions of targeted core traumas. And I think I had some real aha moments. but then I was directed to DBT therapy which is so much like studying yourself and learning techniques etc. that it becomes much more intellectualized. And since then, I'm fascinated by learning all these things. but I have a hard time feeling what I've learned as true. so now what? 😆

I feel every single bit of the lack of natural love and attention my mother gave me. In childhood & now. I’m fairly certain her mother was the same- both chose not to self reflect but to get cruel when I express CURRENT active behavior that is emotionally harmful. I’ve sat, walked, laid & gone to therapy and spoke on my experiences. I’ve cried and burned through this pain, done CBT.. I am soooo inside of my emotional self and trauma — basically, and I’m left with my only option at this point is going on and reparenting myself when I’m sitting there crying as my 4 year old self ? What’s my goal anyway? My brain is FRIEDDDDD

I feel like it's so much about surrendering to the reality that emotions are not meant to be understood, just felt and let go. It's such an uncomfortable thing to let go of control

Freud discusses the need for the wound to speak of the trauma in order for it to heal. I wrote my philosophy thesis in college using that theory. Golly, I was a pretentious little f*ck. 😂

It would be more helpful to have a discussion about how to extend understanding and intellectualization into the experience of interacting with ones feelings as a felt experience.

This is why I get so frustrated when people are like “I already know all my problems, therapy wouldn’t work for me”. My therapist never ever told me that something was (or wasn’t) a problem, he literally just helped me work through what I wanted to work through

I love listening to you because you're basically explaining to me what my therapist has been doing with me for the past decade. She has been so so so patient with me slowly moving out of intellectualizing and I can't even explain the power of the healing we've done together.
