But the real question is what the rescued person owes afterward. A pale boy floats helplessly in Havana Harbor. A shark comes back toward him with its mouth open. A rowboat full of men leans over the water, trying to reach him in time. The boy was Brook Watson. He was fourteen when he was attacked by a shark in 1749. Copley does not show the rescue after it is finished. He freezes the moment before certainty. The rope has not saved him yet. The harpoon has not struck yet. The hands have not pulled him in yet. But look higher in the boat. The Black sailor is not hidden in the background. He stands near the center, holding the rope that links the boat to Watson. In a painting full of panic, he becomes the calm center of action. That detail changes the whole painting. This is not only about a shark. It is about the human chain trying to pull someone back into life. But history adds something colder. Watson survived, became powerful, and later voted against abolishing slavery. So the shark threatens Watson’s body. History threatens the memory of the person helping save him. Watson and the Shark is not only about a boy who almost died.
