If I don’t have a detailed step by step or being shown how to do it. I don’t know what you want me to do

I’ve done this my entire life, to the point of skipping events or avoiding restaurants or places where I wasn’t sure of the procedure. Like I overpaid on auto repairs recently because the cheaper place had a confusing appointment system I couldn’t understand so I went somewhere else. It causes so much stress and missing out on things.

I'm the same. I remember being like 6 or 7 and i was playing with my cousin. an plder cousin (like 15) gave us a bunch of verbal instructions to play a game that consisted on a series of "goals" or "objectives" to see who would do it faster. ok now imagine you receive these instructions "run to the pole, run around 3 times, go to the big rock and collect a leafy, go upthe stair two steps at a time, when you reach the top do a spin. then go around the corner, collect a rock, come back around the fountain, and you finish your race here *points at random place on the ground*"
i just ran behind my cousin and imitated what she did. i had no idea what was going on 👀

Reminds me of my first karate exam, they were like "ok you can start" I was like, doing what? I had no idea you were supposed to learn the moves by heart, I thought we were just punching and kicking for fun 😭 like wtf is a kata, nobody ever told me i had to memorize shit, I stood there like 5 minutes in the first position until the coach took pity and showed me by doing it with me side by side

Have no idea if I’m autistic but I had a similar thing where I can’t really picture what the author is trying to paint in my head through the words. Like I can pick up context clues and all of that but I can’t picture when the author try’s to map out a house like “the far corner from the door” I physically can’t picture where they’re trying to locate me so I just make up my own image and get confused when the next scene doesn’t match my interpretation. I’ve hated reading until very recently for this exact reason.

I have exactly the same thing, but also without exception as a mother. My parents didn't pay much attention to me either. So I totally didn't understand anything. I can learn something only by myself

Verbal instructions can be so difficult! I never played sports as a kid, but as an adult I find this still happening to me, especially when drills were explained in roller derby. I would often just ask a friend for clarification so I didn't have to ask in front of everyone. I have gotten better at being able to ask for more explanation of things now, but as a kid I for sure just winged it or didn't do certain things.

Omg in school i always NEEDED written instructions so when my teachers would verbally explain things for a long time i would get so stressed bc i knew i was going to have to waste time figuring out what the instructions were while others were able to jump right into the assignment after they were done explaining 😭 and a lot of times i would need to re read the instructions multiple times

For me I didn't have awareness of other people so I most CERTAINLY ask questions
Also a problem was that I didn't really understand that they were asking for pertinent questions, and I'd ask about tangential things
like they were still related that weren't important to what we were doing right that minute

This was super obvious for me in gym class. I didn’t really do sports otherwise. I’d do as they said,& get in trouble for it. I was always last, even after the girls who’d scream and run away from the ball.💔

Hi, this isn’t really relevant but I finally got my autism diagnosis and i feel so validated. I struggle with so many things all the time and always have, now I have a reason, I’m not an idiot. I just think different.

Personal experience even if you’re really good at a sport coaches don’t care if you don’t have a certain personality. I was ignored as a beginner then once I became advanced I was still ignored. A lot of the kids and teenagers who had bigger personalities got more attention and experiences than me.

similar things: i only realised quite late that people learned things via observation. kids singing and danci g the macarena? baffled me because no one taught it to me and i didnt know what it was. the ither kids were didnt understand how i didnt know it. it all culminated at around 12 when the music teacher chose a popular song for us to sing and pretty much everyone knew the lyrics already. so he didnt hand out lyrics cheats. i didnt know the song. when i asked if i could have one, he said i would learn it by heari f ithers do it... i didnt even know that was really possible, because even songs i had been listening to for a long time i couldnt remember all the lyrics exepept for like. one. thats when i realised that regular people could in fact learn things by mimetism.
