@kiradastarr: e l u k a m i🤚🏾🪻🇺🇸 black american temporary body art which honors enslaved ancestors of the Gullah Geechee South and Hoodoo communities who harvested the indigo plant which would stain their hands and arms blue. [ FAIL I WILL REDEEM ] unfortunately I brought the incorrect indigo powder that would stain my hands with its beautiful dark blue-ish or black tint. I will be trying again tho very soon🤭🪻#elukami #indigofingers #junetheenth #blackamerican #gullahgeechee
I see what you’re doing, baby sister! When you’re done with that, don’t forget your Tignon and your cigar if you’re gonna do it right!

Fun fact: using tape is a west African tradition in their own body art practices. You should see what kind of tape they use to make this easier on the skin. All roads lead back home 💖

For all the people saying this is African. Do yall comment this on other cultures videos who have similar practices? Thats a genuine question considering so many cultures have this exact practice for one reason or another. The reason for Black Americans is tribute to our ancestors that worked with indigo and made to wear denim so they could be easily identified as slaves. Are yall okay? Why do yall need us to claim African when we are mixed with so many cultures that we now have had our own for over 400 years. Many of our ancestors being indigenous to America and we also share ancestry with the yts(against our will). We are not African we are Black Americans. I wish yall would instead try to relate instead of belittle. Saying something like “our cultures share this” instead of “you got that from Africa” as if we haven’t worked tirelessly on birthing and keeping our own customs alive would really bridge the gap on a lot of these diaspora debates. Or better yet just leave us tf alone.

just a heads up, indigo can’t be applied as a paste like henna can, it’s not strong enough to truly create a blue stain in that form. Indigo needs to be left to ferment for a while in a vat of a highly alkaline solution, and the hands need to be dipped over a long period of time before a stain will appear, as is how enslaved people on indigo plantations got their blue fingers. The process of fermenting indigo was an extremely hazardous process due to the fermentation process and chemicals necessary to have the dye stain onto any kind of fabric, so I’d be very careful with using indigo! Make sure to wear a mask and be in a ventilated area to protect your lungs if you plan on fermenting it 💙

Did this to honor my Gula GeeChee grandmother. She used to work the indigo fields as a kid. Her hands still had a blueish gray tint.

Technically elukami and indigo fingers aren't the same. Elukami was inspired by indigo fingers, but crucially includes traditional, meaningful, African American motifs and patterns

Idk if it’s similar to henna but my Somali mom would rub olive oil on her hands after it completely dries and she scraped off the dried bits. I think the moisture might make it harder to stain
