@godswayhorserescue: Horses in my care get the privilege of receiving care in the least stressful/forceful way possible.🤍 Nova has done well eating yummy paste out of a syringe through the front of her mouth. But when you would move the syringe to the corner of her mouth and hold her halter, she would get tense, brace up and try to move away. When I did that little experiment, I stopped right away because it was just to see how she would do and I didn’t want to push her and develop any negative experiences. But she was needing to be receive oral sedation so I needed her to be comfortable and confident with it, AND I prioritize making it as much of an enjoyable process as possible. And that includes letting her call the shots. Through cooperative care, she has the power to say “I’m ready” or “no not yet” which is incredibly powerful for helping horses through procedures that aren’t their favorite. She would tell me she is ready by performing the head hold behavior- her putting the bridge of her nose to my hand and holding the contact. That would be my go ahead to put the syringe in the mouth and under her tongue. This created an environment where administering the sedation was so easy, calm, low stress. 🙌 *It is recommended to wear gloves when administering oral sedation.
