1️⃣ You’re never gonna feel ready to start your business, you just have to decide to start messy and learn as you go. Be ok with falling on your face a million times and moving forward from past mistakes. 2️⃣ That being said, you need to have a savings before you begin to support you in the slow months, because there will be slow months, especially as you work on gaining momentum. 3️⃣ It’s better to start out with one product or service for one specific client and perfecting it before adding more. You’ll spend a lot more time and energy figuring out the workflows and logistics of doing many different things for many different people than just doing one thing. 4️⃣ You are your boss, co-workers, HR department, project manager, marketer, and creative all wrapped into one. Just as you wouldn’t want to work in a toxic workplace, you need to learn how to be a nice boss and co-worker to yourself, meaning that going freelance requires a lot of internal work. 5️⃣ Saying no to misaligned projects is just as important as saying yes to the right ones. If a project’s rate (whether it be monetary or personally fulfilling) is lower than the mental energy it’s taking up in your brain, it’s probably not worth it. It’ll end up draining you and take your energy away from projects you’d actually want to work on. 6️⃣ I hate to say it, but having a consistent schedule and morning routine really does keep you on track. Even though you can get coffee with your friends during your prime working hours doesn’t mean you should. You have to keep your working time sacred. 7️⃣ You have to wake up every day being delusional, believing in yourself, and fully feel like you can make your dreams a reality, or it’ll be hard to get out of bed every morning. 8️⃣ You’re never gonna feel like you fully know what you’re doing. After talking to other creatives, many of which I greatly admire, I’ve realized that we all are just figuring it out as we go. And in a way, that’s quite reassuring.
