@debbiespetsitting: such a frustrating end of my shift today. I understand that in a perfect world we would all have to eat a numbers and we could always give them to CVS when they ask but for a non-controlled substance it's not only not necessary but it's also unrealistic to think that every single that has a DEA number. #vetmed #cvs #dea #vetmedlife #eyedrops
I (veterinarian) just give my DEA number to pharmacists. I used to not want to do it (because that’s pretty much what we were taught), but I know the pharmacists aren’t out to get us, they’re just trying to do their job! The problem is their systems aren’t set up for vets, and while there is usually some type of work around, they generally need a NPI or DEA for their systems to work easily. I guess the problem would be if a vet doesn’t have a DEA#, but I’ve always had one so I just try to work with them now. My sister is a pharmacist (she worked in retail for 10 years), and I truly believe they may be the only health care professional that is treated worse, or at least the same, as vets so I empathize a lot with them.

The main reason the pharmacy needs a DEA or NPI number is because they're billing the eye drops to a discount card to save the pet owner money. They cannot bill a discount card without that info.

The system where I work only takes DEA or NPI. There is no other option.

It’s just soooo hard to find a vet in the system. Sorry you had this experience. We aren’t out to get anyone it’s just easier to put it in the system that way. Unfortunately I don’t have a spare 10 minutes to type in a vet prescription 😩

Why are vets so protective of their DEAs like its this super secure thing? Its not, every hardcopy for a control ever has had it. Also do you want me to be able to run a discount card or not? Cause the majority require either a DEA or NPI

:/ I mean yeah we dont have to add an npi/dea for a vet but we cant use good rx or any coupon without that.
if you want ur pts to pay full price thats fine! we can tell them that when they pick it up!
we also half the time wont be able to add the vet to the system. anyone can call and claim they are a vet/doctor. having the npi/dea is also PROTECTING you and the pharmacy from getting in legal trouble. and making sure we are using the correct name. sorry idk which Jennifer Smith you are.

At mine (non CVS), we have to have a DEA or NPI to add a provider.

Walgreens Pharmacist, we don’t NEED to have it, but it is true it is easier to find vets that way. Usually, our local vets give it knowing we can sometimes use it so the patient can use discount cards and not pay full cash price. If patient is fine with 100% cash price, we can get around requiring the DEA. Usually explaining that scenario vets want to help the patient with costs knowing we can’t control the discount card requiring something on file (and they won’t use the vet license for some reason unbeknown to me 🤷🏽♂️)

Honestly it's actually a lot easier to find doctors in the system at my pharmacy via DEA if it's not a doctor we've filled for before or if the doctor is out of state

I agree with frustration but if you call in meds to your local pharmacies they have the DEAs on file. I would assume this pharmacy did not have the prescriber in system and it will not go through. It's a system issue. It's not the person it's the system.

The system has improved but believe we are not after ur DEA for any thing else than pull the vet up....we are both professionals, that should be enough

This is a large reason our practice is no longer calling in scripts. Arguing with human pharmacies was taking up way too much of our staff’s times.

In MI you can’t use discount cards without an NPI or DEA lol. We’ll charge you 700 dollars when it could’ve been 20

The collaborative goal should be working together to get the Rx filled for a patient whether it was an animal or patient. Opposed to arguing we could just be given info to make it easier to find you. I get it’s frustrating but arguing to prove party A is right or wrong or party B we prolong care to our patient. If I cannot find you in Walgreens system we have to add you manually, which takes time. Depends on what’s going on in the store. Faxing a script is always an option as well.

They can look it up in other ways!!! It just takes them an additional step!! You don't need it for a non-controlled substance. Use there f'ing license number. I loathe CVS and their pharmacists, they are so so rude.

If your clients are using a retail pharmacy so they can use a goodrx card the goodrx won’t allow it to process it without it

You literally need a DEA or NPI on the script, especially out of state, and vets don’t have an NPI so…

Also, when y’all prescribe controls like phenobarbital, it actually is required. So why not just provide it? I don’t know why it’s so hard?

we can’t add and look up a prescriber in the system without DEA or NPI, its the pharmacy asking for it not some random person

Trying to understand the when you don’t want to give ? I don’t want to do a lot of things but with a fellow healthcare provider ? They’re part of the team ? Course non controls don’t need but literally just easier and helps the patient get it quicker. If don’t fine get that but if had NPIs literally nobody wouldn’t be asking for non controls.
