As a parent of biracial children, I never focused on skin color at all. The focus was solely on how beautiful my children were inside and out and they were comfortable in their own skin. We read books about other biracial children and families and surrounded them with a diverse school/learning environment. Pointing out color was just not something we did in our home.

So I have a weird one: my daughter is autistic and very intelligent. However, she has an extremely difficult time telling races apart. I'm Latina and her dad is white. She is very pale and has that golden sheen a lot of white/Latinx kids have. (It's weird but I can usually peg a similarly mixed person now.) However, from a very early age (3!!!) she told me she hated her skin. She is very attracted to darker skin tones. I'm really not sure where that came from. It's not "race related" because she can't visually tell races apart. She even draws herself with darker skin tones. I let it be since 🤷🏻♀️and her social counselor is keeping an eye on it. (I have an olive undertone that's very different from her pink undertones but that's not what she draws herself as 👀) We do talk about race but more from a cultural perspective since I think culture is more important than looks. She knows most people see her as only white but I remind her she's fully entitled to see herself as Latina, too. Her dad fully supports leaning on Mexican culture since white culture is already the dominant one where we live. It's weird and I have an extra balancing act to nail 😭
