the place I live has two Walmarts, a Costco, two targets, two lowes, two home depots, a college campus, three high schools, three middle schools, and four elementary schools (one of them is a private catholic institution) and people still call it a small town because there's just nothing to do here

The "historic downtown square" is unusable and all the restaurants are local chains from the bigger city nearby. People keep saying "Jack Browns is the best burger in town" and none of them realize it's a chain (still good, but not local whatsoever).

I grew up in an actual small town and moved to a city like this. They still say small town life but then also mention their thriving walkable downtown full of modern restaurants and businesses.
