$I’ve never understood why anyone would choose to race a car at over 200 miles per hour. This is something I’m always thinking about when I watch GT racing and Formular 1 - especially Formular 1. So I found a way to experience it for myself. Safely. I built a racing simulator, loaded up F1 25, but then, it still didn’t feel real. So, I decided to try something else and this actually broke my brain. The Pimax Dream Air is a small VR headset with 8K OLED lenses, that weighs less than my phone. But that’s only half of the gist. Here’s the thing about VR that nobody tells you. Immersion isn’t just about strapping a device to your face. It’s about clarity. The Dream Air has 8K OLED lenses, that’s close to retina level, and at that level of detail, something changed. My brain started to do this thing where it thinks that I’m actually in a car, so when the race started it felt different. I caught myself holding my breath through the fast corners, braking into corners became instinctive and I hated crashing even though I knew nothing was real. My reactions got sharper the more I raced because the stakes finally felt real. And that’s when it clicked. This is why F1 drivers train their reflexes to insane levels. At over 200 miles per hour, everything is happening faster than you can think. Seeing clearly and reacting instantly isn’t a skill advantage. It’s survival. I only experienced a fraction of it, virtually, and my body and brain were already working overtime. I still can’t tell you why someone chooses to do that for a living. But I understand it differently now. And I have a deeper respect for Formular 1. The technology, the rules and the skills F1 drivers build to win at insane speed. I believe that at its core, this is what VR does when it’s done right. It’s not just something you game with.
